Flipshare TV: Flip Videos on Your TV I got an email last week announcing a new gadget/service from Flip called Flipshare TV . The new gadget, retailing for $149.99 , allows you to stream your videos from your computer to your TV, without the need for setting up a streaming media server or a wireless network. A move like this for Flip makes a lot of sense, particularly after being acquired by Cisco this year.

Electronic Arts will be releasing Army of Two: The 40th Day in January. However, potential game customers can get in the game early…..not by playing, but by creating. The game has a custom uniform and armor creator , which allows players to create their own look, and then play with the custom duds on their own characters when the game is released in January. Gaming has evolved a great deal over the years, and it’s exciting to see developers embrace the idea that users would like to (and will) create their own content. My brother and I are still playing the original Army of Two, and we like it quite a bit. Army of Two: 40th Day will be a day one purchase for us. When I emailed him to tell him about the custom armor creation, he replied, “I put My Little Pony emblems on your shoulder pads

Congrats to the team at Skype on the finalization of their sale from eBay last week and their new independence ! We’ve long been fans of Skype and have been a partner of theirs since back in 2005. As I’ve noted in previous blog posts, notably “ Skype-ifying your voice applications “, we automatically provide an inbound Skype number to call any XML application you create on our Evolution developer portal or any JavaScript, PHP, python, ruby or groovy app you create on our Tropo.com cloud telephony service . (And here are instructions about how to find that number for Evolution and for Tropo .) I wish the folks at Skype all the best as they transition back to being an independent company and look forward to continuing to work with them in the time ahead.

At VoiceCon SF 2009 last week in San Francisco , I (Dan York) spoke about “ Developing Voice Apps Using Mashups and SOA “. In the talk, I discussed what voice “mashups” are, gave a couple of examples, and then went on to show one of the Tropo.com examples found on the documentation page – the specific one I showed was the Yahoo!Weather example in python . I logged into my Tropo.com account , created a new application, indicated that I wanted to use a hosted file, copied/pasted text from the example, and then set up a phone number and IM address

As he did back at eComm in San Francisco in March, photographer James Duncan Davidson (”Duncan”) has been at it again this week in Amsterdam at eComm Europe with this outstanding set of photos from eComm: http://www.flickr.com/photos/x180/sets/72157622680355908/show/ Here is the Flickr set as a slide show: Voxeo’s RJ Auburn and Jay Phillips can be seen here: RJ: #1 , #2 , #3 , #4 , #5 Jay: #1 , #2 , #3 , #4 , #5 Scattered throughout that photo set, of course, are so many other friends of Voxeo… it’s great to see! By the way, how does Duncan get such great shots? Obviously a lot of it has to do with his skills as a photographer, but it is also about quantity .

Many of Alden Library’s finest marched in the Ohio University Homecoming Parade on October 17, 2009. Here’s a few clips of video from our walk through Athens. We all had a great time.
You’ve got to know when to walk away, or know when to run…. I’ve worked with some interesting patrons lately. As a reference librarian, I love to help people find answers to their questions, and I really love helping them with business research. The thing I love most about business research is that there is no one place to look for business research questions. I tell my students there is no Walmart for business information; you have to go shopping all over town. Now this analogy can backfire, and I’ll tell you why. With the thousands of dollars that we spend for business databases, books, and journals, there comes the inherent expectation that every single piece of knowledge about a company, industry, or product ought to be available somewhere (and it ought to be available online). Most librarians will tell you that it’s impossible to have everything online, and most business folks should know that companies only disclose what they have to or what they want to. This makes the search for business information a little tricky. How long, deep, far do you look for information before you decide that the information you are looking for does not exist? When do you decide that the information is impossible to find when you’ve tried and tried and you still haven’t found what you’re looking for? (You can start humming U2 now if you wish ).

Some students today were supposed to take a test, and Blackboard was not cooperating. The test timer was covering up the submit button, so they could not complete the test. It turns out that the test-taking feature of Blackboard 7.0 does not work well in Internet Explorer 8
While working the reference desk this afternoon, some journalism students came to the desk to interview a librarian about the library and technology. I obliged, but filmed them in the process for fun.
A while back I wrote about how Meebo and Pidgin are like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups . In that blog post I described how to use a plugin for Pidgin that would allow you to connect to your Meebo widgets through the Pidgin IM client. Well, for some reason, this stopped working for me quite some time ago

I took a little time before work this morning to play with my cameras. I shot some video with my Canon SD780 IS and my Flip Mino to compare the two cameras. This video shows the differences.
