Before we get to the stats, I should mention that at the top of my thankful-for list this Thanksgiving was our growing group of Automatticians. These are the folks who bring you the awesome features and improvements that you see here every month. Last month we launched geolocation for profiles and posts , introduced a new P2 , opened up our new translation platform , GlotPress , and launched email subscriptions

November Wrap-Up
I recently had the chance to witness the effects of innodb_adaptive_flushing on the performance of InnoDB Plugin 1.0.5 in the wild, which Yasufumi wrote about previously here and here . The server in question was Solaris 10 with 8 disk RAID10 and 2 32GB SSDs used for ZIL and L2ARC, 72G RAM and 40G buffer pool. We started it up with innodb_adaptive_flushing=OFF and innodb_doublewrite=OFF, then ramped up traffic and everything looked stable ..

For the coders among you, you may already know that posting source code is really easy here on WordPress.com thanks to the sourcecode shortcode . You just wrap your code in [ sourcecode ] and you’re good to go — no code escaping or anything. If you are one of those code posters, or are looking to become one, then you’ll be happy to know that we’ve updated the feature allowing more flexibility as well as adding support for additional coding languages like Bash and SVN diff

In the US there are some strange traditions, and one of them is the day after Thanksgiving when people line up from 3 or 4 in the morning to be the first people in a store when it opens to get some item for a really good price. This is ostensibly to get a head start on Christmas shopping. We’ve decided to replicate this experience but without the cold, the early morning, or the scramble to get to the door first

Announcing our first-ever video contest, brought to you by turkey, stuffing, and that gelatinous stuff that grandma calls cranberry sauce. Yes, that’s American Thanksgiving. Appropriate to the occasion, the topic is giving thanks

The full translation of WordPress.com is an ongoing process, of which you are a great part and whom we thank for the patience and assistance. Thanks to you, WordPress.com is now available in 60+ languages (and, yes, before you ask, esperanto , too). As you know, any text that shows up on your dashboard, widgets or (most) themes can be shown in one of the supported languages, by specifying a different language in the Language Settings of your blog’s dashboard.

I forwarded on a list of questions about PBXT to Paul McCullagh today. While Paul’s busy answering them, I’d like to announce that Robert Dempsey ( InfiniDB storage engine) and Bradley C. Kuszmaul ( TokuDB storage engine) have also accepted an interview. If you have any questions about either storage engine, please post them here by Friday 20th November.

When I did NDB Cluster engagements, it happened a few time that I had to cover the NDB API. Once, a customer asked an example on how to perform a simple scan. Remembering that some examples are within the NDB source tree, under ./storage/ndb/ndbapi-examples/ and I decided to take a look, why writing something when a good example already exists… I was not expecting what I found! 1

This weekend, November 14-15, a whole bunch of the friendly faces from Automattic and WordPress.com will be in New York City to attend WordCamp NYC . If you’re a NYC area local (and really, with Acela service being what it is, doesn’t that almost mean anywhere from Boston to D.C.?), we hope you’ll join us at what’s shaping up to be one of the most exciting WordCamps of all time . (Okay, I’m one of the organizers, so of course *I* think it will be awesome, but in this case, I’m right!) What’s so great about this WordCamp

You know how in addition to the main movie you have extras on the DVD. Extra commentary, bloopers, extra scenes, etc? Well welcome the Tyrant extras. With my previous blog posts I was trying to set-up a case for looking at NOSQL tools, and not meant to be a decision making tool. Each solution has pros and cons that will impact how well the technology works for you. Based on some of the comments and questions to the other blogs, I thought I would put together a little more detail into some of the deficiencies and strengths of Tokyo Tyrant. #1. How durable is Tokyo Tyrant

As Calpont announced availability of InfiniDB I surely couldn’t miss a chance to compare it with previously tested databases in the same environment. See my previous posts on this topic: Analyzing air traffic performance with InfoBright and MonetDB Air traffic queries in LucidDB I could not run all queries against InfiniDB and I met some hiccups during my experiment, so it was less plain experience than with other databases

A recent photo from Highload.ru I said in my last post , that we’re interested in speaking at MySQL meetups, and I’m happy to say that the Los Angeles MySQL Meetup has taken us up on the offer. On November 18th, I’ll be giving an introductory talk on InnoDB/XtraDB Performance Optimization . I will be the second speaker, with Carl Gelbart first speaking on Infobright. What brings me to LA? On the same day (18th Nov) I’ll be teaching a one day class on Performance Optimization for MySQL with InnoDB and XtraDB . If you haven’t signed up yet – spaces are still available

First time I heard about Galera on Percona Performance Conference 2009, Seppo Jaakola was presenting “Galera: Multi-Master Synchronous MySQL Replication Clusters” . It was impressed as I personally always wanted it for InnoDB, but we had it in plans at the bottom of the list, as this is very hard to implement properly
