XtraDB: The Top 10 enhancements

Note: This post is part 2 of 4 on building our training workshop. Last week I talked about why you don’t want to shard . This week I’m following up with the top 10 enhancements that XtraDB has over the built-in InnoDB included in MySQL 5.0 and 5.1.  Building this list was not really a scientific process – It’s always difficult to say which feature is better than another, because a lot of it depends on the individual workload.  My ranking method was to pick the features that have the highest impact and are most applicable to all workloads first: CPU scalability fixes – XtraDB improves performance on systems with multi-cpus (see docs 1 , 2 ).

Just how useful are binary logs for incremental backups?

We’ve written about replication slaves lagging behind masters before, but one of the other side effects of the binary log being serialized, is that it also limits the effectiveness of using it for incremental backup.  Let me make up some numbers for the purposes of this example: We have 2 Servers in a Master-Slave topology. The database size is 100 GB (same tables on each). The slave machine barely keeps up with the master (at 90% capacity during peak, 75% during offpeak) The peak window is 12 hours, the offpeak window is 12 hours.

‘Result of 2010 elections crucial to BPO industry’

BACOLOD Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue Thursday said the results of the May 2010 elections will be very crucial to the fate of the local outsourcing sector since Bacolod and Negros Occidental would only be able to move up in the value chain if it is steered by right leaders. Batapa-Sigue, chair of the Bacolod -Negros Occidental Federation for Information and Communications Technology (Bnefit), said the city and province would only be able to move up the value chain from voice-based IT services to the more high-end services if it has the right leadership, both in the public and private sector. In a videoconference last week with Bnefit and other stakeholders, Tholons CEO Global Managing Partner Avinash Vashistha challenged Bacolod, Iloilo and other 10 Next Wave Cities to move up the value chain, from business process outsourcing (BPO) to knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) and even to IT outsourcing (ITO).

Strong Words About Climate Change at G8

According to an AP article by Nicole Winfield and Alessasndra Rizzo , both the UN Chief and UN Secretary-General strongly criticized the Group of Eight for not doing enough to curb the practices that result in harmful climate changes.  They report the UN Chief “rebuked” the group “for failing to make more commitments to reducing climate change in the near term, saying they must do so if the heavily polluting developing world is to follow suit.” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also weighed in on the subject saying “industrialized nations must come forward with financing for poorer countries to change their carbon-heavy growth patterns and adapt to the effects of global warming.” The discussion about climate change is part of a meetingof a  ” 17-nation group called the Major Economies Forum , which has become the G-8’s main forum for climate issues.” Want to know more? Is DRBD the right choice for me?

It seems pretty common to find customers install DRBD for the wrong reasons. There are many pros/cons to compare DRBD to replication, but I’ve managed to cut down my spiel I give to customers to these two points: DRBD’s aim (assuming replication mode C) is to provide 100% consistency, and then as much uptime as possible. MySQL Replication (with a manager such as MMM ) aims to have 100% availability, at the potential loss of some data surrounding a failure
